Today the station building is boarded up and unmanned.[1]

History

The station opened a few days after the line on 29 November 1873, but only for goods traffic. The passenger facilities were incomplete, and the station was not opened for passengers until 29 December the same year. The station was initially named Springs, with other early names including Springhurst, Bontherambo, Naringa, and the incorrect spelling of Narimga. The name Springhurst was not adopted until October 1890.[2]

The station handled heavy traffic from the Wahgunyah district until the opening of the branch line in 1879. A weatherboard station building was erected in 1878, beside a through track goods shed already there. Track layout alterations were made in 1885, 1899, 1906 and 1919. A signal cabin was provided in 1887, but was moved into the station in 1899, along with the platform being extended to 350 feet (110 m). The present brick station building dates to 1950.[2] The standard gauge line and road underpass date to 1962.[3]

As part of the North East Rail Revitalisation Project a second platform will be constructed on the standard gauge line, in conjunction with the standard gauge conversion of the existing broad gauge track. Work begun in December 2008, and will be competed by late 2009.[4]
